RT is reporting that 3 officers of the most elite anti-terrorist unit in the Ukraine, they are called “A” or “Alpha”, were caught in the city of Gorlovka, near Donetsk. Read the full article and watch the video of their interrogation by reporters here.
Now let me provide some context here.
The Ukrainian SBU is a truly frightening secret service. Ever since it’s foundation following the independence of the Ukraine the SBU did some work arresting gangsters and criminals, but it’s most feared mission was to be the “enforcement” service of whoever was in power. The top of the top of the SBU forces were supposed to be the “A” or “Alpha” anti-terrorist forces. It is rather cute that the proudly independent Ukies felt the need to use the same designation as the hated Moskals whose famous anti-terrorist group is called “A” (the Alpha thing is a media invented misnomer and an attempt to sound like the US “Delta” Force; in reality the group is called “the A Directorate”). Anyway, they call have the same name, but in terms of skills or record the two groups are very different. For one thing, the Russian “A” never was the enforcement service of the regime and they had no political role or mission at all. Second, they really did deal with anti-terrorism and very serious organized crime.
Still, by Ukrainian standards, these are the top of the top. These are also the folks who have been kidnapping anti-regime activists over the pasts months. I have to note that the previous commander of the Ukrainian Alpha was sacked for refusing to engage in operations against the Russian-speaking population – so there were some honorable officers in this group. But by now it is pretty clear who stayed. And they mission was typical too: to kidnap the head of the local police department.
The hunters became prey |
Instead, the three wannabe kidnappers got caught themselves.
The three captured today were lead by a Lieutenant-Colonel, no less. For the Russian militias to have detected, intercepted and captured three undercover Alpha officers is already fantastic, but to catch an Alpha Lieutenant-Colonel is nothing short of miraculous. It is also a testimony of the absolutely unique level of gross incompetence of the Ukrainian security service to have such a high ranking operative caught.
It is also highly ironical.
For days the regime in Kiev was reporting that it caught GRU (Russian military intelligence) officers here, then there, then again over there. They were never shown, of course. At the GRU HQ in Moscow they laughingly declared that by now the Ukies had caught so many GRU officers that the entire GRU personnel was now in captivity and the GRU offices empty. So imagine the pain and embarrassment in Kiev when they found out the self-organized militias of a small town near Donetsk managed to capture 3 Alpha officers alive, including a Lieutenant-Colonel.
The video shows them pretty well-banged up – they did resist being captured – and completely despondent. All three clearly realize that their screwup deserves to be listed in the Guinness Book of Records under the “amazing incompetence” heading.
The past 24 hours have been a disaster for the junta in Kiev: first a group of spies pretending to be with the OSCE got caught, and now 3 Alpha officers are also captured.
Except attacking a few checkpoints and stealing its food and medicines, the junta forces have so far totally failed to achieve anything. The single most feared segment the junta’s security and enforcement apparatus was the SBU, which is also the best equipped and best trained. And then this.
I wonder what else could go wrong? Will a US national working for the CIA be captured wearing a silly wig? Or maybe a junta official like Avakov or Taruta?
Let’s just hope that nothing terrible happens tomorrow as the regime might try something “macho” to save face, like Reagan did in Grenada (arguable the worst military operation in modern history, by the way).
Stay tuned. Kind regards and good nite,
The Saker

You couldn’t pay Canadians to be Americans…
The story from Bloomberg talks about Diane Francis’ book Merger of the Century.
Diane Francis is a Chicago born journalist/disinformation agent of the United States government who was once an editor for (I believe) the Financial Post. She trots out this idea every five or seven years to test the waters. This is her function along with stinking up Canada on behalf of the Chicago oligarchs.
38% is a completely made up number. Everything this nasty and obnoxious far right yankee bitch has ever said is a calculated lie.
Saker,
You’re entitled to miss one now and then — I can’t imagine what it must be like wading through all that crap! Mr. Nora says hi and is still blown away by the time and effort you put into this blog. Your analysis also, too. ;~) And from what I’m reading on DPRK, your friend’s words seem pretty accurate.
Daniel Rich:
OMG. The Nile Bowie piece recommended by der einzige explains pretty well the (exceedingly warped) psychology behind this, as well as the roles played by isolation, racism and xenophobia as well as keeping people ignorant and feeding them a steady diet of propaganda lest they start thinking for themselves or seeing the difference between what they believe and what is. (Hmmmm.) And their hatred for us certainly makes sense — nowhere have I ever before read that we killed nearly a third of their population, far more than when we nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki! Wow. In three years of bombing, according to Brian Willson in http://www.globalresearch.ca/korea-and-the-axis-of-evil/3464, we destroyed 78 cities and thousands of villages. (We sure do know how to make friends and influence people, and didn’t exactly win that war either.) But oh, I do wonder how people so thoroughly brainwashed ever come out of it. (Again, hmmmmmm.)
It’s coming back to me…
Diane Francis was foisted onto Canada by the Chicago mob not very long after the assassination of JFK (they wanted Canada too!) She was always closely associated with disgraced media mogul and formwer owner of the Chicago Sun-Times Conrad Black who renounced his Canadian citizenship in order to accept a peerage in the UK House of Lords.
The renunciation occurred because then Prime Minister Jean Chretien refused to approve the appointment (required by Canada/UK law). The peerage, purchased from none other than Tony Blair, allowed Black to briefly became Lord Black of Coal Harbour — only to be evicted from the House of Lords after being convicted of embezzling investors in his media empire.
Black was deported to Canada after serving his sentence in an American prison and is now literally begging for the return of his citizenship. He was also recently stripped of Canada’s highest civilian order.
Had enough of the ignominy? There’s more.
Despite being utterly despised Black was himself foisted onto Canadians and made the host of an interview show on a third tier cable channel. Here he is interviewing the incomparable Rob Ford!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CLxmYfdVK8
So, THESE are the people who brought you this propaganda piece suggesting 38% of Canadians would agree to join the US for half a million bucks.

I posted some info here about this on 12 April from RT:
Pentagon ponders ‘logistical nightmare’ of Afghan withdraw
http://rt.com/news/us-afghanistan-withdrawal-russia-880/
With cooperation with Russia from NATO ceasing, I doubt any NATO countries terrorising Afghanistan will now be allowed to use Russian territory to transport their materials and troops now.
http://rt.com/news/eastern-ukraine-army-operation-680/
“18:49 GMT: A pro-federalization supporter, who had been kidnapped from the checkpoint at Volodarsky mine in the Donetsk region, has been found.
“We’ve found him on the road a couple of kilometers away from the mine. He’s severely beaten up. We called an ambulance for him,” the activists told RIA-Novosti news agency.
The checkpoint at the mine, which stores a major arsenal from the first and second World Wars, was assaulted on Saturday when over a dozen gunmen arrived in a military helicopter.
One of the four unarmed activists on guard was wounded, two managed to escape and one was seized by the attackers.”
Good that he was found alive, hope he will be OK. I think this further shows that the “soldiers” who attacked that roadblock were either nazi irregulars or mercs.

For a really short article it’s a great read. Very well written.
Whew. That Willson piece was hard to read: who here knew that we first invaded Korea in 1866? Then we did it again in 1871 with the largest military force we landed anywhere (except Mexico and Canada, of course — we never count them!) until the Spanish-American War and, of course, the lovely number we did “bringing Christianity” to the Philippines. Again, der einzige’s recommendations are superb, if fairly painful to read. sigh

I’ve been checking it about once per week for close to a year. It is mostly accurate when checked against news sources from Syria.

Good depiction of North Korea, warts and all, in three police procedurals by “James Church,” pen name for diplomat (my guess U.K.) with in- depth knowledge of country. Fourth book, about merger with South, is more like science fiction. “Church” depicts North Koreans as patriots, who love their country, only country they have, no matter what. Worth reading.
This post exceeds the 4096 characters limit. So, here’ part 1:
I have to say that I do like the wildly meandering dicussions and threads which sometimes develop here, once the original subject has been debated exhaustively. Your blog and its comments section really is something special and precious, Saker.
Regarding the DPRK: For the average person it is almost impossible to come by any realistic impression of the country since most 3rd party accounts simply cannot be trusted. For the time being I therefore try to avoid forming any strong opinions on the DPRK. What seems clear though is that the country has developed in a strange and new direction which appears alien to most of us. I think, the main reason for this lies in the history of the Korean peninsula … the horrors of the Japanese occupation, the bestiality of the American extermination campaign against the people of North Korea, the enforced isolation of the country by the US and its allies while at the same time supporting Syngman Rhee’s murderous despotism in the south, the loss of the USSR as trading partner and the subsequent economic troubles etc. All of this goes a long way to explaining what conditions and forces have contributed to the present reality of the DPRK. But I think these influences cannot serve as excuses should Juche turn out to be the abominable perversion of Marxism/Leninism it is made out to be by the mainstream … which is why I am so annoyed with some western Marxists who blindly support anything with a “C” in the alphabet-soup of parties.
Anyways … a while back Pepe Escobar had an excellent 4-part series on North Korea in Asia Times. Here’s a short excerpt from that series …
The US air war on North Korea was an incredibly vicious bloodbath. Washington bombed the DPRK with more napalm than it used on Vietnam – with even more devastating effects, because the DPRK had many more large urban centers (18 out of 22 were almost completely wiped out) and urban industrial infrastructure than Vietnam. In only four months, from June 1950 to October, B-29s discharged more than 860,000 gallons of napalm over North Korea.
Not surprisingly, and as in Iraq and AfPak decades later, the Pentagon hailed its “precision bombing”. When China stepped into the war, Washington’s air war went on overdrive, not only destroying most North Korean towns and cities but at the end of the war smashing huge dams that supplied water for no less than 75% of the DPRK’s food production.
This post exceeds the 4096 characters limit. Here’s part 2:
With the Chinese allied to the DPRK in the battlefield, America’s General Douglas MacArthur dictated that the whole area between the front and the Chinese border would become a wasteland; that meant in practice the destruction of every “installation, factory, city and village”. MacArthur wanted to use tactical nuclear weapons (“The only passages leading from Manchuria and Vladivostok have many tunnels and bridges. I see here a unique use for the atomic bomb … Sweeten up my B-29 force”). President Harry S Truman also threatened to use nuclear weapons, and almost did in April 1951.
Later, in an interview to the New York Times on April 9, 1964, MacArthur said, “I would have dropped between 30 and 50 atomic bombs … strung across the neck of Manchuria”; then, “spread behind us – from the Sea of Japan to the Yellow Sea – a belt of radioactive cobalt.” In pure Dr. Strangelove fashion, MacArthur was referring to cobalt 60 – which is more than 300 times more radioactive than radium.
And that was not all. The Pentagon and the Central Intelligence Agency were busy exploring new avenues for the weapons of mass destruction of the time, via what was called “Operation Hudson Harbor”, by dropping dummy atomic bombs in simulated runs. Civilian North Koreans feeling the thunder down there obviously didn’t know if that was a real atomic bomb or not. The Pentagon also considered employing a barrage of chemical weapons.
As Bruce Cumings, arguably the best American scholar on North Korea, observed, even “without the use of ‘novel weapons’ – although napalm was very new at the time – the air war nonetheless leveled North Korea and killed millions of civilians before the war ended. North Koreans will tell you that for three years they faced a daily threat of being burned with napalm … By 1952, just about everything in northern and central Korea was completely leveled. What was left of the population survived in caves.”
… and for those who have 20+ minutes spare time here’s the entire, very interesting series on North Korea …

Pourquoi il faut déclarer la guerre à la Russie (Why we must declare war on Russia)
http://www.lepoint.fr/editos-du-point/patrick-besson/pourquoi-il-faut-declarer-la-guerre-a-la-russie-27-03-2014-1806094_71.php
Found this satirical editorial at ANNA. Between using an auto translator of the Russian there, the French at Le Point, and a bit of guesswork, this is what I came up with.
Patrick Besson, Europe’s conquest and subjugation of Russia, begun by Napoleon in the nineteenth century, must go on!
It is time to finish the job started in the early nineteenth century by the French Emperor Napoleon I, and the middle of the twentieth century, by the German Chancellor Hitler: the European conquest and subjugation of Russia. Much has been said about these two brave enterprises whose failure was largely due to poor weather. Berezin and Stalingrad entered the language as synonyms of confusion and rout. It’s time to rid the European consciousness of that inferiority complex which arises in him when he thinks about Moscow. In other words: take Moscow.
We can take Moscow now. In the nineteenth century, the United States was still a secondary provincial power, and did not have the resources to transport fresh troops and new weapons which Napoleon would have needed to overthrow the tyrant Alexander I and his treacherous general Chief Kutuzov.

No, Zapad je završio s uništavanjem Ukrajine.

Also is it possible to get rid of the anonymous option? It is difficult to follow the thread.

Part 2 of 2
In the twentieth century, by one of these tactical aberrations which history has many, Hitler was prevented from seeking military assistance from the United States, because they (fortunately, very briefly) were Russia’s allies. Now it is not the case at all. The leaders and the media in the European Union and powerful North America are now all on the same wavelength about Russia: contempt, disgust, hatred. Even the more foolish strategists at NATO understand that in such incredibly favorable conditions, there is but one thing to do: Attack Attack.. Attack Russia!
At the heart of any war must lie moral and humanitarian motives. The road to hell is lined with good intentions, said André Gide, who had discovered before many others the satanic evil nature of the Russian state. In politics, it’s the same. Especially in foreign policy.
Moral and humanitarian reasons
The colonization of Africa was not made to exploit, but to heal and to enlighten; once they were treated and enlightened, they were only asked to make a modest contribution to the development of the European economy, but even this some resisted, and many had to be decimated. Moral and humanitarian reasons to attack Russia abound. First, there is the Ukraine, the latest new Western and American passion. The Ukrainian is to the 2010s what the Bosnian and Kosovar were to the 90s of last century: beautiful people with lofty sentiments and pure thoughts. Depriving them of the Crimea, which was Russian three times longer than Ukrainian, was the cruelest insult, and a major blow to the intellectual and mental balance of Ukrainians, this new model for humanity. But it’s not only that. Russia has been in recent years giving us new reasons to attack, invade and destroy it. Suffice it to briefly recount: Femen blondes and Russian billionaires imprisoned, a refuge for American traitor Edward Snowden, Putin embraced French deserter and tax evader Depardieu etc..
Obama and Ashton, let us not repeat the mistake that was fatal for our illustruious predecessors, namely Napoleon and Hitler, we must act now if you do not want to, like them, remain mired at Stalingrad or freeze on the Berezina. I even wonder if it is not already too late in the year, and that it would not be wise to postpone the attack to 2015. One can not allow Russia to humiliate us for the third time! That can not be!
Hi Where-Wolf,
Thank you for such an excellent write up on Canada. :)

One word about the caught german soldiers in the Ukraine, when a german soldier is going anywhere he must have a marching order signed from a higher rank. So it would be interesting to see who signed them?
To all the Canada “experts” – the whole story above is simply nonsense.
Canada is a part of the British Commonwealth and as such a private property of the queen. All canadians are nothing but subjects and the government is just a dog-and-pony show. The queen can send them home the next moment, as she already did several times. Same goes for Australia, NZ etc. – the british queen is the highest authority in the country.
So there CAN never be a “merger” of US and Canada, it can only be an annexation of the US by the Empire. Although the first 13 states still do belong to the queen…
Don’t be so hard on the Empire conquering Grenada in the luridly entitled Operation ‘Urgent Fury’ (but better known in light of Ronnie’s prostate problems as ‘Furious Urgency’). I seem to remember some of the heroes demonstrating their martial valour by sacking the Cuban Embassy (F…the Vienna Convention’ as that latter day Judith, Victoria Nudelman might have said)and writing some friendly and slightly illiterate declarations of Yankee Exceptionalism on the walls in faeces. Whether they used their own, I am not certain.
Lumpy Gravy, don’t forget the bacteriological warfare waged against Korea by the Real Evil Empire. They were utilising not just their own research, performed on untermenschen like the Afro-American victims of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, but, crucially that of the Japanese Mengele, Shiro Ishii of the infamous Unit 731 established in Harbin in Manchuria. This group performed rather hideous experimentation, including vivisection (live dissection) of humans, including children. Their germ warfare operations in China killed thousands, and, after the war, in return for turning over his ‘invaluable research’ to the Yankees, Shiro Ishii was protected from prosecution, which the Soviets demanded, by his new Yankee friends. Later he even worked at the infamous Fort Detrick, the centre of US bacteriological warfare research. In a lovely touch, redolent of our ‘Judeo-Christian Western moral values’ at their finest, he converted to Catholicism on his death-bed.

No, he’s not the politician, but an academic.
History in Quotations
The Varangians were mainly Scandinavian, but after the Norman Conquest, included many exiled English, most of whom were killed in Byzantine service, losing another battle to the Normans in 1081, at Dyrracchium (Durres in Albania) I think.
Battle of Dyrrachium
Nora. Timothy Snyder is a frequent guest on our ABC, and is fawned over for his Rightwing, anti-Russian balderdash. As my old Granddad used to say, ‘I wouldn’t cross the road to piss on him if he was on fire’. And, yet again, the narrative of the Holy Jew as the most important beings in any situation. Their ‘safety’ is paramount over all Lesser Beings, always.
Odin’s Raven, the only threat that the inmates of the Grenada lunatic could pose to the USA is that of competition. So, they had to be ‘taken out’. It ‘cured’ their madness-US charity at its finest.
I came across a quote by the ‘Iron Chancellor’, Otto von Bismarck, who did know a thing or two about politics …
This is it:
“The secret of politics? Make a good treaty with Russia.”
Seems all our politicians ought to ponder that … after all, everything went downhill to WWI after his advice and his politics were thrashed by the young know-it-alls.

German plan: Get rid of Timoshenko, consolidate a moderate pro-Russian leader; and allow federations east and south; no NATO in Ukraine

In other words, Germany accepts the Putin plan, or Putin accepts the German plan (USA is left out, but will it allow it?)

Yes, the Diane Francis crowd has been at it for a while re the US-Canada merger. I don’t know if the poll about the half a million dollars per head and 38% agreeing was conducted or not, but I do know that, without any tangible incentive, the overwhelming majority of Canadians (probably above 95%) would oppose to join the US. What made me think of that was your story abut Sparta annexing its neighbor because it was easy. Most of Canada’s resources are already at the disposal of the US after NAFTA anyway. Water being a significant exception. The US would love a complete annexation for many other reason. Average US folks are a bit hurt when they hear how much Canadians dislike the idea, Lol.

“The goal for EU and USA – a coup d’etat in Russia.
Peter Iiskola, an international diplomat, argues that the European Union is not a democratic institution .Furthermore, he firmly believes that both EU and USA are planning a coup d’etat in Russia. The Finnish Mr. Iiskola has worked, among others, in the Council of Europe and as Coordinator in UN. His interview is published in The Kiev Times with reference also to the VESTI.LV,
Iiskola believes that the main “puppeteer” in the international arena is the United States. In fact, they lead the European Union. The European Commission consists of the Commissioners, who are appointed by the European Council, and not elected by the citizens of European states. Therefore, the decisions taken by them are not displaying the people’s will.
Events in Ukraine were organized for the replacement of one government to another, which is more suited to the West, he says. At the same time Ukraine is not the end goal of the tandem USA-EU. Their goal – is to Russia. Both EU and USA, according to Iiskola, seek to organize a coup in Russia. For the West, it was handy when the power were in the hands of people like Berezovsky,Abramovich and Khodorkovsky. After Vladimir Putin dismissed these “politicians”, the situation is more complicated for the West .
The reason for EU and USA concern with Russia is that the mainland is likely to be formed to the Eurasian Union. Even without Ukraine, the construction of this Union remains real and becomes a real counterweight to the EU. Eurasia comprises 75 % of the world resources. The U.S. can not allow someone else to control such potential.”

So can someone like Lavrov or Putin or Shoygu convince some important Ukrainian military leaders (like the ones who surrendered ;last week) to do a counter-coup in Kiev and take back the power.
The US and EU will shout but it will be difficult for the US to directly blame for an Invasion.
The terms would be like following :
1. The Military removes the Kiev Junta from power and all the prominent members of the Junta would be put on trial for treason (for removing a democratically elected President Yanukovich on the orders of a foreign power)
2. Ukraine will be under an able Martial law administrator (say till 2016) whose job would be to crush the Neo-Nazis. In this Russian special forces could be assigned to say target specific trouble makers.
3. In the meantime a new constitution providing for greater federalization for Ukraine would be put into place with the help of like-minded nations.
4. Ukraine will maintain balanced relations with both Russia and EU.
5. Hold the elections in 2016 and let a new government come to power.
In this case Russia will not have directly intervene but the Junta will be out of power.

“For just one example of the establishment’s dissemination of absurd Russophobia, look no further than the recent spy film Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, which features Kremlin-directed Orthodox Christian suicide bombers attacking Mammonism’s Holy of Holies, the New York Stock Exchange.”
LOL!!!
An Orthodox Christian suicide bomber is the equivalent of a Cold Sun, an impossibility!
Those people are simply going nut!
Oh boy, I love the smell of (their) desperation in the morning.
To indulge the fiction, I think we could add a statement from the Patriarch:
“I deny the allegation! In fact, we would just nuke it; it would be much more effective.”
@Maedhros:An Orthodox Christian suicide bomber is the equivalent of a Cold Sun, an impossibility!
You would think so, wouldn’t you? And yet, the first suicide bomber in Lebanon was an Orthodox Christian girl Sana’a Mehaidli (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sana%27a_Mehaidli) who blew herself up along with an Israeli Army convoy. Yes, in the land of Hezbollah the folks who first used suicide bombers were Orthodox Christians.
Amazing, no?
Cheers,
The Saker
Appalling more than amazing….
The source linked says nothing about her faith, but I’ll take your word.
Never say never, isnt’t it?
Nevertheless, I would stand by my definition: it’s an impossibility!
In fact, if every person baptized or received in the Church was just for this an Orthodox Christian, we wouldn’t need the Second Coming to “restore all things”.
I would also slightly correct your statement: in the land of Hezbollah the folks who first used suicide bombers were from Syrian Social Nationalist Party.
Penny, never been to CBC. Apparently I have been cloned. I am usually banned eventually at all fora, certainly at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, but they seem, nowadays, to censor everyone but Rightwing psychopaths (forgive the tautology). And I have, on the rare occasions that I Googled my nomme de folie, quickly found various Zionazis happily boasting of ‘leaning’ on various outlets to have me banned. You see, I’m guilty of the crime of seeing Palestinians as human beings and their decades-long brutal oppression as wrong. That makes me an ‘antisemite’ in this country, which is only slightly less dominated by Zionazis than poor old Canada.

Response of Donetsk People’s Republic Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the “OBSE” hostages. Someone should translate it into english, it’s a beauty.
It’s like Lavrov wrote it himself! Basically, the countries that sent these military observers are in serious trouble – from a judicial point of view.

Canada is a part of the British Commonwealth and as such a private property of the queen. All canadians are nothing but subjects and the government is just a dog-and-pony show.
Dog and pony show?
I agree.
You may be ‘property’ of the Queen but that because you consent.
I don’t.
Penny
Yes, I’m Canadian.
You are right. We are already occupied but for me the question is by whom?
I think we are occupied by globalist internationalists who have no loyalty to any national, religious or ethnic group.
These people are a class with certain characteristics. They are nomadic and parasitic. Zionism is part of a family of beliefs to which they adhere. Fundamentaly they believe, like the ‘Jews,’ they are an oppressed and naturally superior group whose birthright is to rule the world.
The rest of us, who tend to be more sedentary and productive, are seen by them to be fools who should taxed, exploited, poisoned — whatever. All is justified for these the gangsters in the name of their economic and social ideologies.
As for straight up annexation, it makes little difference. Canada is useful to them for the time being but they will discard it at a moments notice if they feel it no longer serves their purposes.
Meanwhile for the rest of us, Canada is our home and our community. If we could ever figure out a way to take it back, we might have a useful tool for defending the local people against our cancerous overlords.
Thanks for the link. I’ll bookmark it.
