Enemy of my Enemy? When was China ever Russia’s enemy? The 1950’s border spat is the only thing one can dredge up. Why write something like this for this video?

    • Boris Kazlov on June 11, 2019  ·  at 9:10 pm EST/EDT

You did not understand. Both countries have a common enemy, that is why they are so close.

      • Ugh... on June 11, 2019  ·  at 10:06 pm EST/EDT

I completely understand. The phrase is “Enemy of my Enemy is my Friend”. The way you phrase it is different than the meaning of that saying. Poorly written.

China has had huge territorial claims against Russia… pretty much 50% of Siberia.

        • Lumpenkönig on June 12, 2019  ·  at 1:56 pm EST/EDT

Would the Russian elites be that stupid to let millions of ethnic Chinese settle in Siberia?

          Divide and Rule hasbara.

        • Ugh... on June 13, 2019  ·  at 9:18 am EST/EDT

China and Russia around 10 years ago finalized their border disputes with Russia ceding a small portion of land that was on the other side of a river to China. China does not have an official claim against Siberia. There are people trolling in the West about that. “Pretty Much 50%”, find that in any international court against Russia. 50% of Siberia is massive exaggeration of the different dynasties that had reign in the regions. Suggest looking up Ancient Maps by dynasty to see for yourself. Saying China has rights to claim Siberia is about as silly as Mongolia having a say in demanding their borders back from the height of the Golden Horde. Siberia is Russian and the two sides have great ties. Many Chinese cities were helped built by Russia and have long connections. Russia helped China many times throughout history. Have you ever been to Manzhouli? It is an interesting city. The whole territorial claim nonsense originates from Western minds not wanting any good relations between the two neighboring states.

          • TN on June 13, 2019  ·  at 3:58 pm EST/EDT

The fifth column in China has tried to fan anti-Russian sentiments and anti-government sentiments (the government is weak, doesn’t care about national interest, etc.) by “reminding” people that such-and-such a part in Russia once belonged to China. It has had very little success. “But they’re a bit late,” as Ms Zakharova said in the interview.

The attitude is of one who has grown very tired of a petulant child, an utterly worthless child, but whose father and grandfather were good, at one time.

This petulant child insists on throwing its weight around. Because granddad had a lot of clout and daddy still has a little, petulant child feels she can make demands, but the other children on the block are growing up and her father is growing old.

Thus, Maria Zakharova is explaining to petulant child why she is no longer welcome.

    • Anonymous on June 12, 2019  ·  at 12:53 pm EST/EDT

      I think you mean indignant.

The battle lines are getting hot — the political economy is as healthy as the real economy is unhealthy.

Here in remote Western Australia, where pre-latest round of insanity the state/provincial government had engaged to install a 5G network (for the transport system I think), there is a today a newspaper public announcement that the state (now in a post boom recession and needing every opportunity it can get) rejects advances by China for more Belt&Road development and tourist benefits. The little and somewhat unpopular premier of the state — an ex-navy man from Queensland — is obviously caught in some deep federal-level politics. As usual, the state’s mining and energy economy, which pays very low resource rents and royalties (I understand about 70% of the net$ benefits flow to overseas shareholders in New York and London etc), is almost entirely dependent on China’s markets. So, now we cannot have modern 21st century 5G (until the USA invents it I assume), nor the benefits of a surge in tourism from cashed up middle class Chinese visitors. And it is somewhat curious that the other Australian state that will mostly benefit is, you guessed it, Queensland with its popular Gold Coast and Barrier reef etc. There is no rational market in operation today. Buckle up seems to be the wise move.

I’m a little embarrassed to post this link from the local rag, but it is a case in point and perhaps has some novelty value in both the scope of this general malaise and the local language/spin used on the (inside) edges of the American empire.

    • Mulga Mumblebrain on June 12, 2019  ·  at 6:16 pm EST/EDT

WA is the next ‘target’ for massive Chinese investment, is it. But good, White, Western, Judeo-Christian investment is OK, of course. Redolent of the days of The Bulletin headlining that eternal message – ‘Australia for the White Man’.

Here is one more for Zakharova’s list of ‘you should’ or ‘you should not’ issues in Empire’s stick and carrot game: You should not travel to Russia. But as she mentions they are a bit late. The Independent Barents Observer reports that Russia has just anounced an e- visa facility without invitation for all passport holders from China, South Korea, Japan, EU countries and non-EU countries that are Schengen members, like Norway and Iceland.

Note that ‘citizens from the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States are not to be included in the new e-visa system’.

Crossing the line of absurdity: Trump’s G20 tariff threat to China sinks US diplomacy to new low

    https://www.rt.com/news/461557-us-tariff-bullying-tactics/

“US President Donald Trump’s threat of more tariffs if Chinese President Xi Jinping doesn’t show up to the G20 summit is a “new low” for US diplomacy,”

This is trump playing to his zionazi-gay base, emphasis on gay. Petty gay, the sort represented by fox and the likes of mark levin and rush limbaugh.

  10. Corey on June 12, 2019  ·  at 4:29 am EST/EDT

China should only be considered a temporary ally against a rabid threat that is the US. Once the American empire is toppled, I fully expect China to try to take its spot and continue on with the same thuggery and global domination ambitions. With its technology, population, and a government that cares little for human dignity, China will be the greatest threat to human race in the future.

    • sean the leprechaun on June 12, 2019  ·  at 12:01 pm EST/EDT

So the biggest threat to humans is not ‘climate change’?

      • Mulga Mumblebrain on June 12, 2019  ·  at 6:22 pm EST/EDT

Take your pick. Climate destabilisation. Massive pollution of chemicals, plastics, heavy metals, micro-wave radiation, nuclear wastes, depleted uranium munition by-products etc. Biodiversity loss in the sixth extinction event. Thermonuclear war, bio-warfare, chemical warfare. Genetic engineering. Time’s up, I’m afraid.

    • Mulga Mumblebrain on June 12, 2019  ·  at 6:19 pm EST/EDT

I rather think that is simply racist xenophobia, and Western projection of their ‘values’ onto others. There is, naturally, no evidence for your thesis. You’re looking into the mirror, that’s all.

      • Corey on June 13, 2019  ·  at 1:29 am EST/EDT

You assume that I’m pro-West or even Western just because I criticize China, and you’re wrong on both counts.

There are actually plenty of evidence to China’s global ambitions and abuse of power in many forms how they treat their own citizens under a total surveillance state, predatory lending and buying up foreign lands, their appalling levels of pollution and damage to the environment, their treatment of their ethnic minorities, their continued investment in AI which is potentially the greatest threat to human race (see Sam Harris’s TED Talk for reference), and so on.

By resorting to ad-hominem and automatically calling me “racist” you admit that you have no argument.

        • DM on June 13, 2019  ·  at 8:00 am EST/EDT

Mate, when was the last time you were in China?

The current population of China is 1,419,792,525 as of Wednesday, June 12, 2019, based on the latest United Nations estimates. China population is equivalent to 18.41% of the total world population. China ranks number 1 in the list of countries (and dependencies) by population.

Don’t know where you are from, but China is starting to make many parts of the “west” look like third-world countries in comparison. With 1.4 billion people to look after, I don’t think they are too concerned with your false accusations regarding human dignity. They, in actual fact, are providing real prosperity and human dignity on a scale unprecedented in all of human history.

For Americans and Westerners, China provides a glimpse of what could have been – instead of the shit-holes that we have now.

          • Mulga Mumblebrain on June 13, 2019  ·  at 6:01 pm EST/EDT

Western racists really hate the fact that the Chinese have created the greatest and most dynamic economy on Earth, a scientific and technological power-house and a beacon of decent, utilitarian, social progress, so they lie, and, crucially, project their own filthy racist, class-hating, psychology onto the Chinese.

        • Mulga Mumblebrain on June 13, 2019  ·  at 5:44 pm EST/EDT

You repeat the same mendacious claims that I can see any day on Pox News or any other Western Sinophobic hate site. And you quote Sam Harris as a source. Not hiding your light under a bushel, are you.

          • Corey on June 14, 2019  ·  at 1:04 am EST/EDT

And you repeat the same lines of the Chinese government propaganda machine. But what do I know, I probably need to go to one of those Chinese re-education camps to be brainwashed to become enlightened like you. :P

PS. China is a nation-state, not a race. You can’t be a “racist” for criticizing China. It is just as ridiculous as calling YOU racist for opposing my views.

            • Mulga Mumblebrain on June 14, 2019  ·  at 4:38 am EST/EDT

Most Sinophobes that I encounter plainly despise China because they hate and fear the Han Chinese, because they are ‘non-Caucasian’. China’s fantastic accomplishments are seen, also, by this type, as a sort of cultural insult, thus the lunatic claims that China’s technological rise is thanks to ‘theft’, when the USA was and remains the greatest thief of others assets and accomplishments in all history. I assume, too, that you have endured re-education by Fox News and Breitbart.

              • Corey on June 14, 2019  ·  at 5:48 am EST/EDT

Look, you can have whatever opinions you want no matter how misinformed. But please don’t make assumptions. I’m not western and I don’t waste time on rubbish like Breitbart and Fox. If you keep making baseless and untruthful statements to attack people, it just makes you look weaker.

                Adiós

                • Tomsen on June 14, 2019  ·  at 5:26 pm EST/EDT

Taking a more sincere approach to your comment, you may be right but not on your assumptions.
Anyone with knowledge to the Chinese will know they don’t have precedence nor history as imperial global power and invasions.
China sees their involvement globally as a passive defense against many previous invasions from outside, from West. Imagine 1,4 billion people, why would anyone need more to rule?
You must admit that from poor conditions China raised 400 million up in the middle class whatever one might think of the methods. Chinas school system is one of the best, giving excellent opportunities to children and youth.
But the Orwellian authoritarian surveillance system, Smart grids and AI may be difficult to swallow, only to face its already arriving in West too.
We need to see things from their side, not our own.

  11. peter mcloughlin on June 12, 2019  ·  at 7:29 am EST/EDT

It is true: the powerful can unite their enemies. The US is facing a formidable opposition. The lesson of history has not been learned.

  12. Mikhail on June 12, 2019  ·  at 10:38 am EST/EDT

Well said, very clear, as usual with Masha.
    Spasibo..!

  13. Emmanuel Goldstein on June 13, 2019  ·  at 5:02 am EST/EDT

Beautifully put Ms.Zakharova…indignation, yes – but a righteous indignation, as in ‘who do these people think they are?’…..
