As soon as I finished my post about why the Novorussians cannot go on the counter-offensive they did. Right?
No, no really. Sorry. I don’t want to rain on anybody’s parade, but we have to carefully assess what is going on. I have listened very carefully to the reports from Novorussia and here is what I think has happened:
From guerrilla to combined-arms:
The Novorussian military command has announced that from purely guerilla-type of operations it has switched to “regular” (combined-arms) military operations. What does that mean? Well, in this context it means that instead of the hit-and-run kind of tactics I described yesterday, the Novorussians will go on the offensive in attacks which will include tanks and artillery support. Officially, the Novorussians have formed at least 2 tank battalions, several artillery battalions, and they have freed 7 towns (Agronomicheskoe, Novodvorskoe, Osykovo, Novokaternikova, Leninskoe, Stroitel and Novoazovsk) and surrounded six more (Blagodatnoe, Kuteinikovo, Voisovskii, Ulianovskoe, Uspenka, Alekseevskoe). The southern cauldron been fully reformed, and now includes 5000+ surrounded Ukies including the Aidar, Donbass and Shakhtersk National Guard battalions). Finally, the Ukie forces in Ilovaisk are in full retreat. This is all very good news. But this is not a strategic counter-offensive the Novorussian suceesfully take Novoazovsk and move towards Mariupol this will be far from over.
For one thing, while it appears that the Ukies were caught off guard, they are far from being down and out yet. Second, if the Novorussians really make a move along the seashore towards Mariupol, they will risk being surrounded the way the Ukies have been in the “southern cauldron”. Last, but not least, a couple of tank battalions, even supported by artillery, are not the kind of forces that will liberate all of Novorussia.
Don’t misunderstand me, what has happened is definitely very good news, but this is not the “counter-offensive to Kiev” some have been expecting. Still, if the Novorussians are truly successful this time, this could mean that the junta has reached the “breaking point” I have mentioned in my recent post.
Ukie Independence Day celebrations in Kiev and Donetsk
It was a bizzare day today. While the Nazis were celebrating their (now truly lost) “independence” in Kiev, the Novorussians were parading Ukie POW in the streets of Donetsk and, in a recreation of the German POW parade in Moscow in summer 1944, washing the street after the prisoners. That kind of parading is a violation of the Geneva Conventions, but against the massive and systematic violation of every concievable norm of civilized behavior by the Nazi junta since the coup which brought them to power, this is a rather modest violation on the Novorussian side. And the Ukies really deserved it. It was also a great PR move. Best of all, it really denied Poroshenko his much expected victory for the 24th. Instead of taking Luganks, his forces were pushed back, surrounded and paraded as POW. I can just about imagine his rage :-)
A good day, but not V day (yet)
Bottom line: today has been a great day and I want to congratulate you all with all the good news, but let’s not assume that this is the beginning of the end and that the Ukie forces are finished. It is *possible* that the Ukies are near or at the breaking point, but at this point in time we don’t have the elements to conclude this.

Do not agree that it was necessary or prudent to parade prisoners in the streets. Can’t see how it helps the cause, at all. If anything, it gives Kiev a talking point to find false equivalencies. A dumb move in my view. Would have been better to treat them exactly the opposite. Throw a banquet for them to show that the East is bigger than that. The prisoners didn’t commit any of the recent bombings.

While your point has a lot of merit, I respectfully disagree: Thanks to the Resistance forces parading Ukrainian POWs in this manner they baited those bastards at the BBC into broadcasting the event. The net of effect of this is that Resistance utterly demolished the latest propaganda campaign being foisted by the BBC: that the Ukrainian Junta was poised to capture Lugansk and Donetsk. Now the BBC looks really stupid (even in front of their doped-down viewers) because they blew-up their own story line that Ukrainian Regime were on their way to victory and the collapse of Donetsk & Lugansk was imminent. All because the idiot management at the BBC couldn’t resist the urge of accusing the Resistence forces of violating the Geneva convention. What a boneheaded move by the BBC: they just showed their viewers hard evidence that the Resistance forces were not only not collapsing, but doing so well that they were confident enough to hold a parade in the middle of the city while demonstrating hard evidence of Ukrainian/EU defeat; parading the Junta’s and the EU’s patsies right in those fat- heads faces (Poroshenko and Closet pedo-nazi Merkel).

Indeed, it seems that the qualitative transformation from reacting to attacks by guerrilla fagicitosis, encircling the cauldrons afterletting them through, to full blown initiative increasing the range is underway, with the dangers that this opens for cutting the lines by the fascists. Yet, what is most remarkable is that it was publicized as a strategic move with the help of Russia. Farewell to keeping a too low a profile. It means political accountability from Russia supporting Novorossya. Indeed, we do not know if the fascists are approaching breaking point. This is a completely new phase of the conflict, full of promises and perils.

Neutral observer here. What’s significant is that Drudge and the MSM aren’t interested in this counteroffensive nor even the two parades. There’s a war in Iraq again and an earthquake just hit in addition to Ferguson and Ebola. I think that the idea of a quick change to offensive operations is misconceived. Support for the separatists can never be overwhelming or quickly increased due to the political necessity of making it look like it is all their own work, at least for mainstream media consumption. I forsee a much more measured “slow burn” offensive, not so much a blitzkrieg, but more of a steamroller, albeit one which moves rather slowly but relentlessly. I could write more but its late.

I’m not sure this thought follows or not, but it seems to me that the purpose of this entire endeavor, life, war, catastrophes in the offing, dealing with people who are turned in the wrong direction and dishonest, is that every last one of us is capable of “redemption,” lets call it, until the final moment.
That I think is the god who does not interfere but is too subtle for your average politician trying to hammer it out. Get wrong thinking alone, present it with a life altering conundrum it cannot work its way through based on its wrong thinking, and that individual may at least begin to alter his or her way of mis-living. Thanks for quoting Malooga on the global resistance. Yes, I believe this also, but I realize now that I could believe it more, and I could fill my mind more with the resistance of good people rather than the evil of bad people.
I do see the global struggle as a class struggle, underdogs against overdogs, in a fight just to get rid of dogfights, period. In this sense the struggle is timeless, and universal, and falls to each person’s hand as and when it falls, with no real surprise.
I know from a few other comments here that I am not the only person raised up in hope by the struggle of Novorossiya. They have shown the way, and I think their shot must have been heard around the world. As all such shots are.

I think the parade is the coolest thing I’ve seen in years! It made me feel happier than I have in a long time. Yes, the Junta deserved it. I think you are underestimating the level of defeat suffered in battles around the LNR and DNR. The 24th, 25th, 30th, 72nd, and 79th Brigades have essentially ceased to exist as fighting forces, and the 1st, 51st and and 80th are well on its way to joining them.
As the Saker pointed out the fog of war is thick making it too early to put together a status report. Besides, one should not discuss the situation on the ground with too much clarity as the UAF could respond.
Events on the ground are promising and the deep budget hole the Junta is building will cause Ukraine to be Balkanized. Federalization is the original goal of the citizens of Donbass. For those of you who have never lived in Ukeland, here is the drill.
All administration positions are filled by appointment from Kiev, read whatever mafia gang is currently in power. This includes everything from city, town, village and oblast (county, kinda) administrators right down to and including dog catcher and everything in between. There are elections held for your local Rada (parliament) positions but reality is whoever is in sway in Kiev will stack the local rada in their favor. Every time there is an gang change in Kiev the entire system countrywide is changed with new administration heads top to bottom, who of course then set up all their friends and relatives in their departments to feed at the trough.
You as an ordinary citizen have precisely zero input as to where your tax money goes and is spent on. Period. You have precisely zero input as to any decisions of any department. Period.
The entire system is set up as a pyramid scheme, and this includes the ‘police’, both criminal (pun intended) and traffic. They are not there to help you, their sole purpose is to lighten your pocket. Period.
Everything works on bribes. You need a new electric or water meter? You buy the meter, you pay for installation, and you pay the bribe to have the meter ‘inspected and approved’ with the proper stamps on the documents. A percentage is kept by whatever little office is doing the inspection and approval, usually 5%, the rest of your bribe money is passed up the food chain to the very top with every level taking off their percentage. I don’t need to Google it. I am a Muslim and I am a Shia. As you can see Ahmadinejad is quoting Imam Khomeini and that it is not even his own statement. I can understand Persian language, I still remember when Imam Khomeini made the statement and what he meant by the statement.

The Geneva conventions were one of the high points of western civilization and one of the main reasons USUK is losing the neocon wars is because they have been *openly* trashing the Geneva conventions since 9/11 – including ignoring violations by their pet oligarchs in Ukraine.

Apart from the moral argument there is the practical one. There are two wars being fought: the real physical war and the media war.
When something is *necessary* then the real, physical war must come first before the media war but when something is not *necessary* then the media war should come first.
Given what has happened to them it is understandable that people in Donetsk would want revenge but if they *openly* go against the Geneva conventions then they become as bad as the neocons and they lose their only advantage in the media war.
