There’s a wondeful Greanville Post article on how Shostakovich’s Leningrad symphony wa played for the city in the midst of the seige to the starving citizens. It relates how there were only 15 musicians available. Here’s the article. If you don’t read it all, at least look at the last picture, which shows the magnificent statues outside the Hermitage museum.

    http://www.greanvillepost.com/2015/05/09/shadows-of-shostakovich-s-leningrad-symphony-and-the-defeat-of-nazi-german-armies-at-the-gates-of-leningrad-in-ww-ii/

And here’s the symphony, directed by a Soviet conductor. You can see the musicians as well as hear. http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/350478

War replayed as ballet/Sochi Opening. Wonderful symbolism, simply done but stunning effect.

Using real tanks saves on props I guess ;)

    Absolutely wonderful.
    Touching.

It is a mystery to me how Russians are portraied by the West as being rude, dumb, agrgressive alcoholics.

This is the creme de la creme of finest arts!
And it also shows how it is done by the people for the people, very emotionally.
Watching this 5 minutes showcases who is the liars and faschists on the plantet: Everybody who spreads or just accepts to believe all those pathetic lies about Russia.

The suffering of 27 Million victoms is felt everywhere.
And the West is laughing and ridiculing, continuing their “games”

I watched this magnificent event from beginning to end. Brought me to tears. A morality play if there ever was one. It’s so sad about the millions who suffered. Doubly sad to think fascists are still trying to destroy Russia and take over the world. War is a racket for the rich. But in Russia’s case, there are just wars that need to be fought. I pray for the day that wars will cease and we live in peace.

Could Russia please produce our Grammy Awards and Super Bowl half-time shows? They are so disgusting! You have to send your children out of the room and wash your eyes out with bleach every time. Keep it rank nasty, Illuminati.

Putin must care, because he took that Super Bowl ring and didn’t give it back (took it as reparations for WW II, presumably). Russians do all their public events so uplifting and classy.

They do seem to have a knack for the perfect blend of pomp and realism.I was astonished at the Olympic shows and once again seeing this one.I seriously don’t think I’m seen better anywhere in the world.

    Russia stole my heart.

    Bravo !

Thank you Saker for presenting this opportunity to those of us not able to personally attend and witness this wonderful event. A beautiful and humbling celebration. The faces of those present expressed a love of country, culture and history which will never be experienced here in the psycho ward of the empire of chaos. Here you see hatred, lack of concern for life on a planetary scale, seething greed and self-interest. Minds so self absorbed, misinformed and completely void of morality on a grand scale. I was humbled by the love of country and mankind evident among all of the spectators. Not much of it here in the police state; the home of the very, very timid.

Can someone please identify the singer at 1:12:00 (https://youtu.be/GTqmWzx8ds4?t=4321) as I would like to access his other work! A link to him or his music will be much appreciated!

    • Anonymous on May 29, 2015  ·  at 7:31 pm EST/EDT

His name is Grigory Leps. And the song named “Save our souls (SOS)” is by Vladimir Vysotsky. Here is the original version sung by Vysotsky: http://youtu.be/oXl5ixBtjpY
