I saw a poll of future Trump voters before the last election. One thing they shared was a common belief that the media was lying. In many ways, the last election was between voters who beliefed the NYT and CNN and then voted for Hillary against voters who don’t believe the media and who voted for Trump.
Hillary won CA and NY by a large margin.
Trump won the rest of the country.
The lesson is that outside of CA and NY, a majority of Americans don’t believe the media. These polls have been reinforced by many subsequent polls that say for instance that something like 70% of Americans don’t believe Russiagate, despite huge efforts of the NYT and CNN to push this farce out on everyone. Americans aren’t buying what the media sells anymore. Some are, but the majority are not.
Since I’ve long said that step one towards any real change is getting the American people to disbelief what the media is telling them, this is an important marker. The western corporate media are losing the ability to tell the American people what to believe.

I am reading the beginnings of William Pepper’s “The Plot to Kill King”. He’s an independent journalist who’s spent 40 years investigating to reach the truth. He is worth supporting, and its a fascinating read so far.
In the beginning, he’s talking about the American power structure, how it begins at the top with the corporations and wealthy who get richer from these wars. He begins with Vietnam, and why they supported the war, but then connects the dots to today. He described the US government as the willing servants of these corporations, and then the media as the willing purveyors of whatever the government is dishing out. And that its only gotten worse now that four corporations control the US media and everything they churn out.
That’s my other reading of today, before I came here and saw this. How the US government conspired to kill and coverup the murder of King, who was threatening corporate interests with his opposition to the war in Vietnam (and the huge sums that was making for these corporations, as well as for bankers and certain law firms), as well as his “poor people’s campaign” that was threatening to bring 500,000 of the poor to Washington to besiege congress until they acted to solve the problem. How there was a civil trial where a jury found for the King family and its theory that James Earl Ray did not kill King, but this conspiracy did, but even to today, the US corporate media doesn’t tell people that and most people still think the original cover story of James Earl Ray being the killer is the truth.
BBC and the rest of the Western media were never about honesty. I remember watching a documentary about one of my favorite British photographers Don McCullin, who said that he stopped working for the mainstream establishments since 1980 because the lies were simply unbearable. For sometimes they were a bunch of talented con-artists but then the “art” got lost somewhere along the lines.

The good journalists in history, from IF Stone to Robert Parry, they always were on the side of the people. They took as their mission to inform the people about what was going on, which usually was how the rich and the powerful are shafting the people. The attendees at the White House Prestitudes Dinner don’t do this. If for no other reason than they know it would cost them their jobs. But most of them seem to be quite happy in their role of helping the rich and powerful shaft and often kill ordinary folks whom they do seem to sneer at and truly hate.
