Except that this “answer” was delayed by something like 15-20 years by the economic crisis and political chaos in the Soviet Union and Russia. And even today, the F-22 is fully deployed whereas the Russians will only begin to deploy the PAK-FA is a couple of years. The Russian Air Force is still actively procuring the SU-35 (a so called “4th+” aircraft). Nonetheless, if we look at “true stealth” + supercruise + 3D thrust vectoring than, yes, this is very roughly a Russian ‘answer’ to the F-22. As to how this thing is turning out, I would say that so far everything I see looks fantastic and highly impressive, but the program could still run into issues – both technological and economic. The good news is that between Russia and India we are looking at a mininal order of 400 aircraft – that is a huge figure which gives me a lot of confidence that this program will be a success.
