The Finnish President and Prime Minister today announced their support for the country’s membership of NATO at the forthcoming summit in Madrid on 29-30 June.
I have no illusions, this is bound to happen without the will of the Finns for which a popular referendum had been promised on the matter, or that it will even be submitted to Parliament, where it would be approved anyway.
The main internal requirement for the admission of new countries is that they “add security” to the bloc. Since when does this move make Europe safer? But there are more conditions and clauses of the international legal framework that are being purposefully violated, and shameless disregard for signed agreements.
Let us not even mention the still pending demands that the Kremlin notified in writing to NATO in December, which NATO chose not even to respond to, and which obviously clash with the current situation. Russia had already made it known that the entry of Sweden and especially Finland into NATO is perceived as a threat. Perhaps it was reasonable to understand the Russian point of view.
The President of Croatia has recently made it known that he will veto the planned extension as it is “a very dangerous adventure”, in the words of his MFA. Any country can and should oppose this clear provocation, but we know that if this happens, those who are interested in the militarisation of Europe will spin the issue one way or another, as there have never been legal or procedural limits of any kind to this complex.
So, if this “express” entry of the Nordic country into the Alliance goes ahead, it will suppose an increment of more than double the length of the current border between NATO and Russia. This should be viewed with great caution, since all members will be affected by whatever may happen from there. This has been said here before, but today the irresponsibility becomes clearer and the concomitant danger more imminent.
After long years of discussion about the so-called possible and reasonable Finlandisation of Ukraine’ as a militarily neutral zone between Europe and the nuclear superpower Russia, we are now much closer to the Ukraine-ization of Finland. Do you know what that means?

As I understand it, Finland gets most of its gas from Russia but uses very little gas as part of its overall energy supply. It will be one of the least affected if its gas supply is cut off.

Not really. Nazism/fascism has been a very minor thing in Finnish politics, mainly active in 1930-1945, and after that not a thing really if you don’t want to paint with black.
If the wish is that “collective west” should see things at times also from Russias point of view, it could be that Russia and her friends also need to try a bit to look how things look from the other side of the table. Building pictures of enemies – unfortunately both sides do that – is unwise and does not help creating peace.
I’d have to say breaking your treaty of neutrality with your neighbor and former opponent in 2 wars. And then while that neighbor is involved in a military conflict, to then announce you are joining a military alliance whose purpose is to be the enemy of that neighbor. That,that is a really bad way to keep the peace.
Not two wars. There have been multiple wars between various stages of Finland and Russia during last 1000 years or so, and multiple times of peace. There is a collective memory of being killed, taken as slaves, governed over, and so on in Finnish mentality. Sometimes by Russians, sometimes by Scandinavians (not in recent centuries). And there have been times of collaboration and friendship.
How most Finns would like to see joining Nato is that it is NOT against anyone, but for Finnish security. They don’t want war. Surely other views exist too. Russia seems to see as a threat if Nato bases are build in Finland – no such bases are planned. Finland has been very actively collaborating with Nato anyway for years, so the change into full membership is perhaps not so big – I think Russia has stated already some years ago that they see Finland as a de facto Nato member. So in best scenario not much changes, and that depends on other developments in near future. Perhaps a Nato state will veto and stop Sweden/Finland joining.

How can you possibly say “no such bases are planned”, as if that statement meant anything? Of course there will be bases, and armaments, etc. etc., so it seems to me.
Not every NATO country has a NATO base as far as i know. Finns don’t want one, generally. It is not a necessary part of membership.
Most Finns like me have traditionally opposed a Nato-membership. In the last decade, all polls have showed that the majority of Finns is opposed to it. That is why there is no referendum now.I sincerely hope someone vetoes and stops this adventure. It is worth noting that president Niinistö was elected with an unbelievably big number of votes in the last presidential election. In tv-interviews he was questioned about the constitutional illegalities that took place in the 1990’s EU campaign. In fact, pres. Niinistös partner in crime, Paavo Lipponen later told in a newspaper interview “that we lied about everything with Sauli.” Most Finns are at the end of their thther with these neoliberal masonic criminals.
Moreover, most wars between Finns and Russia in history were between Sweden and Russia, Swedish colonists used Finns as cannon fodder just as they do now. I predict Sweden will not join Nato, but Finland is sold.
The final piece treaty between the USSR and Finland in 1954, Let the Finns have back the Soviet naval base at Hankö (Hanko) west of Hèlsinki (Hälsingfórs). So now Russia should take that back.
The peace treaty also reaffirmed that the Åland (Aasima) archipelago between Stockholm and Åbo (Turku) should remain a de-militarized and Swedish-speaking Finnish county, as had been agreed upon in 1811. Now, those quite cute islets ougt to become the cind of Summer paradise retreat for Laningraders from Saint Petersburg, just like the Krimea is for the rest of Russia.
I thought the final agreement between Finland and the Russian Federation (not USSR) was in 1992.

Looks like the career of the President of Croatia is over. Accident or scandal on the way.
They didn’t report the entire quote. The President of Croatia stated that he will veto it unless the election law in Bosnia and Hertzegovina gets changed in such a way that Croats don’t get disenfrenchised.
The matter is overly complicated for this short reply, but basically, Muslims (which are an ethnic group in B&H) choose the Croatian representative in the Presidency of B&H, thus undermining the Dayton agreement which ended the war. Croatia is one of the guarrantors of the agreement, and also has a moral interest in Croats in B&H, so that is the basis for Milanković to make this move.
And as for scandals – you should check out the crazy catfight he has with the Prime Minister of Croatia. xD It’s difficult for any scandal to top that – and he’s the most popular politician in Croatia anyway. xD

How are “Muslims’ an ethnic group? It is a religious affiliation. The Muslims in B&H are Slavs (maybe some Albanians?). Ritter stresses the European security framework has to be acceptable to Russia. The draft treaties that Russia presented last December still stand and they are the official Russian position. They explain what must happen before Russia stops its military-technical interventions.
Ritter says that if Finland joins NATO, its army will be deemed an existential threat to Russia; any NATO army in the proximity of St. Petersburg and the Kola Peninsula WILL BE ELIMINATED.

I tried to read those but just couldn’t stomach all the projecting. RAND is great for saying what the war industries want to hear, and there appears to be no exception in these pieces. But, the nerve of Russia wanting to push back!

If it comes to the RF attacking NATO the biggest threats will be the primary targets: Poland’s missile bases and other NATO offensive military assets, etc. To some extent one could look at action in Ukraine as a demonstration of strategy and tactics.

Where are the borders ? My understanding is that the current ones where drawn after WW2 on the premis that Finland would never join an hostile alliance.

Having military, industrial/manufacturing expat and martial arts/self defense background, I fully agree with Scott Ritter’s various assessments – rimes well with my own experiences.
And I also agree with street fighting rules – if fight is inevitable, strike first, and hard, to end the fight there and then. Playing nice will always end in tears at best, extinction at worst.
I know Russia realises this too, as the country has experienced west’s constant prodding and attacks over centuries. There is no turning back, and i will not be upset on Russia if it deems necessary to start rain Kinshals, Zircons and Sarmats across Europe. We certainly deserve it.
I live in Denmark and am Danish. I hope for a miracle… that Finland will withdraw their decision… …. one way of doing that is to admit Oops we have violated some laws etc… we need to send it to the people for voting… ie a referendum… it is that easy for the Finns to avoid being destroyed, one way or another… there are many ways to kill a cat… let them know Russia will cut all trade with Finland gas and all other items… if they join NATO… I wont mention the worst scenario… … I hope the people in Finland will now raise a stink, if they have to decide between Russia and EU/NATO… I advise to choose Russia… ….. Bente Petersen, I have to agree, but with the current government in Finland, don’t think that will happen. Someone behind the scenes is pushing this.
I’m a Finn living in Finland and I have to say we are way past the point of no return here. There is unfortunately palpable popular support for joining nato which is to be expected when people get a onesided narrative about everything happening in the world. This process of joining nato started already in the 90ies and continued with various agreements with nato. This is just the natural conclusion for the process. I’m grieving for the loss of the country Finland was before all this started…

NATO means USA “protection” for the interests of the upper-middle and upper-classes, especially those in finance and real estate, entirely at the expense of the lower classes. It is a powerful argument for those very influential lobbies. The neutrality of Switzerland itself (never mind Finland, Sweden or Austria) has been abandoned because of the financials and real-estate interests of the upper-middle and upper classes. The Russian Federation has nothing comparable to offer to the extractive classes of the european countries, and indeed a large section of the extractive classes of the Russian Federation would like USA “protection” (see Khodorkovsky etc.).

Gonzalo Lira in his latest video chat came to the same conclusion. Thinks the Yamal pipeline shutdown is a prelude or preemptive action against it (among other things). Prior, Ukraine had shut off gas to Europe from Russia by taking control of a Russian pipeline that went through Ukraine. reason unknown and in the fog, but more likely Ukraine did this to pressure Europe into war with Russia. “Go to war for us and we’ll turn your gas back on” type of deal. What Gazprom announced in shutting down Yamal pipeline is that it is technically impossible to re-route the gas Ukraine shut off via other pipelines, which has meant that Europe has lost about 35% of it’s gas supply, With yamal shut down, 65% of Europe’s gas now cut off ( Ukraine cutting off 35 percent of Europe’s gas by shutting down a Russian pipeline that went across Ukraine. Today Russia shut off all gas going to Europe through the Yamal pipeline. That adds up to approximately 65 percent of the gas cut off).
If we decipher Gonzalo’s reasoning in his video, Russia cut off the gas for ONE REASON: because Finland and Sweden are joining NATO since NATO ignored it’s years long process for doing that to make it possible their inclusion immediately. Russia views that as an enormous security threat, so Russia is now weakening Europe in preparation for war by cutting off the gas.
At least that is how i understood the message in his video.

If I had to bet, I’d say we can expect a Russian response to Finland’s accession to NATO.

According to the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, their so-called policy of neutrality is not governed by law, but “is determined according to the international context of the moment”. At present, as at certain times of serious armed conflicts in the past, that context seems to accord quite closely with police state demands and related financial considerations.

As a second generation Finn (all four of my grandparents were born and raised in Finland and both of my parents learned Finnish as their first language in Finnish speaking towns in the US and Canada), I find this new change in Finnish foreign policy utterly appalling.
After WWII Finland established a foreign policy that was called Finlandization: They took no side during the cold war. The reason was very simple. In the 30’s, under the leadership of the fascist Mannerheim, Finland entered into an alliance with NAZI Germany. The Russians objected and this led to the 1939 Russo-Finnish War. The Finns suffered a terrible defeat that resulted in the loss of most of the Karelinian Peninsula. As a result, after WWII, the Finns sensibly decided on a policy of neutrality and took no side in the Cold War. This has resulted in one very peaceful and prosperous nation since then,
So now the current government wants to join NATO!! Are they on a suicide mission? If they do join NATO, and NATO becomes directly involved in Ukraine, Finland will be on the verge of losing even more of their territory.

The main thing how Nato can get into direct conflict with Russia is Poland sends their ‘peacekeeping’ contingent into Ukraine. Russia lobs a bunch of missiles at them. Many of them die. Polish government starts screaming. This should not involve the voluntary Nato article 5 at all, but there’s a chance some Nato member could begin hostilities. US might start hostilities. The rest of Nato members have a choice. Follow into abyss or just sign off the whole thing?
What does Finland do in this case? Attack St. Petersburg? Don’t think so. However, if UK or US forces are there, they may arrange an unavoidable provocation. They really want to be put in that kind of forced situation?

Been living in Finland for a long time as an expat now. Have assets and people I care about here. By far not the perfect country they portray themselves to be to the rest of the world, but it did give me a working chance and a relatively stable life.
I’m pretty sure I’ll be moving out soon though. Whether or not Finland joins NATO it has become a fully propagandistic country to the point that it’s impossible to voice any question on the narrative we’re being fed. I’ve started to develop true hatred for it, a seed that I’m afraid is going to poison my well of tranquility for years to come.
However, I realize that the media has just been blowing on embers that were always there. Finns have always been scared of Russians invading, always have been nazis in their own way. The piper is playing a tune already familiar to them.
Finland doesn’t need oil or gas for energy (plenty of nuclear reactors) but their biggest export is refined oil and most of it comes from Russia. Don’t wage war on them, close the tap (soon!) and let them figure it out for themselves. If they start building troops on the border or missile bases push back, hard.

This is just my personal judgement. Could be that you participated in WWII crimes, or that you still have far right paramilitary groups patrolling the streets with the blessing of the Police to this day, or that you went as far as burning crosses in front of the few refugees centers a few years back. Not long ago you had regularly elected politicians participating in nazi rallies. As an expat I’ve had my fair share of experiences (some far too personal) with your far right, and the government complacency towards them. What happened was Soviets saw Nazi Germany growing in power and Finland flirting with them. Obviously they concluded sooner or later German armed Finland would attack. They wanted a buffer between Finnish border and Leningrad, which eventually occurred. This fact probably contributed to save Leningrad later on.
It must be said that the siege of Leningrad later on from the Finnish side was kind of “on the fence” or opportunistic. They waited to see what happens, and obviously by late 1942 they began seeing that they are on the wrong side.
You can then argue winter war tactics and events, which is a whole other discussion all together.

Here in Norway we have foreign troops located in the north for the first time since WW2. It is that ‘not really permanent rotating style’ location … but still. I consider us to be under Nato occupation post WW2, we never got to vote on the membership either.
Now the so called Elite, wants to try to push us into EU for the third time. At least we got to vote on that part, eventhough it didn’t make any difference. There was no vote for the EEA agreement, which in essense is a ‘trade agreement’ membership of EU without voting rights. This is a storm in a teacup. Finland has been closet NATO for decades. The Russians may even welcome it since it offers them strategic clarity and the opportunity to openly treat the Finns as they deserve to be treated.
