Ralph Towner is definitely one of the most talented composers and guitarists of our time. His solo career and his career with the group “Oregon” has produced some of the most beautiful and original music written in our times. Today I want to share with you one of his compositions for solo acoustic guitar called “Anthem”. The main reason I love it is because of its immense lyrical beauty, but it is also a very good example of how Towner takes a deceptively simple melody, then develops it for several voices and then improvises over it while keeping a bass line going. Simply put, this is very very good music and very very good guitar playing.

When I saw the name Ralph Towner I was so looking forward to listen, as I have an old LP from 1975 by Ralph Towner and Jan Garbarek called ‘Solstice’ – it is the most wonderful music.
