Transcript:Iranian Ambassador to Moscow, Kazem Jalali, has said that Russian President Vladimir Putin informed the Iranian Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, of the opposition of European leaders to NATO expansion during their recent meeting in Tehran.

In an interview with the website of Khamenei’s office, the Iranian Ambassador (to Moscow) revealed details of the meeting between the Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ali Khamenei, saying, “The Russian President informed the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ali Khamenei, during their meeting in Tehran, that several European leaders had said when they met with him that they totally oppose NATO expansion eastward and (in particular) towards Russia. However, when they (European leaders) were questioned about the reason behind this expansion, they answered that it is an American demand.”

Ambassador Jalali further revealed, “The meeting covered the topics of enhancing Iranian-Russian trade cooperation; remaining vigilant against deceptive Western policies; preserving the territorial integrity of Syria; the need to expel the U.S. from the east of the Euphrates; and the expansionist tendencies of the West and NATO that led to the creation of the crisis in Ukraine.”

Jalali added, “The Iranian Supreme Leader touched upon several (other) issues, and I think that his mode of analysis strongly appealed to the Russian side. Moreover, Khamenei, who is highly concerned with regional matters, highlighted several points and warnings. As a result, the views of the two sides concerning regional and international issues as well as bilateral cooperation were highly similar. Furthermore, excellent opinions were put forward.”

He continued, “From amongst the most important requests of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution was (that the two sides) move forward in implementing the deals and the memorandums of understanding signed between the two states. Today, we (Iranians) are witnessing the best chapters in the history of relations between the two sides. Furthermore, the Russian and Iranian governments are looking forward to fortifying (mutual) relations, the deepening of ties, and the unifying (of) wills.”

In relation to gradual elimination of the US dollar in trade exchanges with Russia, and the necessary preparatory steps in this regard, Jalali said, “At the present time, 60% of our trade transactions are conducted with the (Iranian) Rial and (the Russian) Ruble, and we are making progress in this regard. Moreover, we are capable of conducting all our trade within this framework, for there is a clear Iranian and Russian will in this regard. And this question was one of the purposes of the visit of the head of the Central Bank of Iran to Russia.”
