I am very grateful that, as a result of a freelance project, I made a friend in Russia, staying in contact with him after the end of the project. He has a wife, a son and daughter. His mother served in the Red Army as a young woman. She died at about the same time my own mother died. I have seen snapshots of this wonderful old babushka, wearing a jaunty beret, with her granddaughter.
